Sod Types We Provide

Sod Busters Turf, Inc.
Which Type of Sod is Right for Me?
Centipede Sod
Centipede (Eremochloa ophiuroides) sod can tolerate a wide range of
soil conditions and does well on acidic, even infertile soil. Because of
a shallow root system, drought tolerance is poor and irrigation will be
required during extended dry periods. Centipede is fairly shade
tolerant; it is not very salt tolerant or wear-resistant. It requires little
fertilizer, but yellowing (due to a lack of iron) can be a problem when
centipede is grown on alkaline or high-calcium soils. Research and
experience indicate that properly-maintained centipedegrass lawns
should be mowed routinely at a height between 1 to 1.5 inches,
receive 0-1 lbs of total Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft yearly, applied in mid-
to late-spring, and possibly again in mid-summer, watered to prevent
soil dessication and possibly top-dressed in spring with soil. Sod
Busters Turf harvests top quality centipede sod daily. It is our most
popular sod for landscapers and homeowners.
419 Tifton Bermuda Sod
Bermuda (Cynodon dactylon) sod is low-growing with a fine texture,
dark green color and good density. It tolerates a wide range of soil
conditions, but best growth occurs on fertile soil; bermuda is less
satisfactory on poorly drained soils. Perhaps the most serious
weakness of bermudagrass is its inability to grow in the shade.
Frequent mowing is necessary, and the preferred cutting height is 0.5 -
1 inch. Bermuda exhibits great drought tolerance, but it has a high
moisture requirement. To maintain high turf quality, irrigation during
dry periods is necessary. We harvest excellent 419 Bermuda, and this
is our lowest-priced sod.
St. Augustine Sod
St. Augustine (Stenotaphrum secundatum) sod is adaptable to many
soil conditions but does best on moist, well-drained sandy soils.
Irrigation is necessary during periods of dry weather. Salt tolerance is
very good and shade tolerance is excellent. It performs better in
shade than any of our other sod products but still needs at least 4
hours of sunlight. Moderate fertilization is necessary. St. Augustine
sod cutting height is from 1.5 - 3 inches. Chinch bugs cause
extensive injury to St. Augustine but can be controlled by pesticide
applications.
Gray Leaf Spot is also a problem with newly established
St. Augustine lawns. The popularity of St. Augustine is growing, and
Sod Busters Turf is proud of the beautiful BitterBlue, Palmetto, &
Raleigh cultivars we offer our customers daily.
Zoysia Sod (ask for availability; usually limited)
Zoysia sod has many different cultivars that exhibit different
characteristics. We offer two main types that are VERY different.
'Emerald' zoysia has a very fine leaf blade and 'Empire' zoysia has a
course, or wider, leaf blade. When ordering Zoysia, customers need
to be specific as to what type they want. Zoysiagrasses as a whole are
cold tolerant, salt tolerant, wear tolerant, and moderately tolerant of
both shade and drought. Zoysia, however, is not a perfect sod.
Zoysia tends to accumulate thatch, and be more difficult to mow than
other varieties of sod. Cutting height of Zoysia should be from 1 -
1.5 inches, possibly up to 2 inches for zoysiagrass growing in the
shade. Research has indicated that zoysia accumulates thatch when
too much nitrogen is applied over the course of a year.
